First time vacation to WDW!!Arrival on 12/26/12,we are driving from NC,Arrive at DAAR around 3pm for checkin. Will be exhausted from 14hr drive, want to eat & do some activities, wld Planet Hollywood Restaurant and the Characters in Flight ride be going?

    Hi Lynn,

I like the idea of spending your first evening at Walt Disney World at Downtown Disney.  There are so many great restaurants there, including Planet Hollywood.  And, of course, there are excellent places to shop.  The Characters in Flight balloon rides, however, were suspended as of July 2012.  We don't know when that attraction will go back into service.  We are awaiting a formal announcement.

May I suggest another possibility for your first night at Walt Disney World?  Have you considered scheduling a meal at one of the Magic Kingdom area resorts?  It is a special treat to visit the Disney resorts along the monorail while they are still decked out in their holiday finest.  Here's what I would do: make a reservation at 'Ohana (on the second floor of the Great Ceremonial House at Disney's Polynesian Resort) or at the Grand Floridian Cafe (on the first floor of Disney's Grand Floridian Resort).  Park your car at the resort where you have a dinner reservation.  After dinner, explore the holiday decorations at this resort.  Then hop on the monorail and go visit the other two Disney resorts along the monorail line. If you're not too tired, watch the fireworks from the beach behind Disney's Polynesian Resort. Then ride the monorail back to the resort where you parked.  From there, you can simply hop in your car and drive back to Disney's Art of Animation Resort.  I bet this plan would give you a magical, but not-too-rigorous, start to your Disney vacation.

Best of luck with your planning!

    Jill

PS.  Don't forget to call (407) WDW-DINE now to book your dinner reservations.
