We are going for the first time to Disney 4/16-4/22 and we are staying at the Caribbean beach resort and we have a 6 year old son. Should we rent a car or just use the Disney transportation that is offered?

    Hi Kim,

To rent or not to rent, that is the question.  The answer is going to depend on what your family has planned during your Disney vacation.  If your family has no plans to leave Walt Disney World property while on vacation, then a rental car is a totally unnecessary expense.  For some reason, the rental car rates are through the roof right now, so I'd look closely at whether you feel you'll really need to have a car at your disposal.  Complimentary Disney transportation is pleasant and efficient so there is definitely no NEED to rent a car.

That being said, my family often does rent a car while on vacation at Walt Disney World.  We love to visit other Disney resorts and to eat at various places around the World.  We find that driving directly to these locations saves us time. When we shop at Downtown Disney we appreciate being able to put our purchases right in the trunk of the rental car as opposed to having to carry them back to our room on the bus.  If we need to pick up a few groceries for the room while driving from the airport, we just stop and pick up what we need.  Again, very convenient!   We absolutely do not need the rental car, but we enjoy the flexibility it affords us while on vacation.

Hopefully this perspective will allow you to make a more informed choice about renting a car at Walt Disney World.  Wishing you a magical April vacation!
