Hi, we have our first ever DW vacation planned for april 15th thru the 21st. Is it terribly busy during that time? Our daughter is autistic and at times waiting in lines can bring on a meltdown.

    Hi Leilani,

I'm so excited for you and your family to experience Walt Disney World for the first time!  April can be a little bit busier than normal.  There are some schools that have an April Vacation, but it's well past Easter, so I would think the crowds would be moderate at this time.  If you take your time in the parks and read your daughter's signals to know when she needs a break, you should have a wonderful time.

When you arrive at the park, take your child to Guest Services.  Explain your situation and ask for a Guest Assistance Card.  I don't think you have to have a doctor's note explaining; however, I've always brought one with me, and it does make things easier.  When you get in line for an attraction, show the cast member this card.  They will direct you to a line that may move more quickly or sometimes give you access to a waiting area that is less crowded.  Still, be prepared for some waiting in line by bringing snacks or small toys for your child to play with while waiting.  I know our cell phone has been a huge lifesaver for us.  If my kids can play a video game while standing in line, they hardly notice the wait.

As far as resorts go.  If it's at all possible, budget wise, I recommend staying in a deluxe resort.  Transportation to Contemporary, Polynesian, Beach Club or Boardwalk is super convenient to at least one major park.  Being able to leave a park for a break at your resort can be a lifesaver.

Hope this helps.  Have a magical vacation!

Meet the Panelist: Diane, Georgia

After spending 25 years in RI, my husband and I relocated to GA with our youngest, who is now in high school. I took my first trip to Walt Disney World when I was 11 and I have traveled many times since then with all different party sizes. From creating our first itinerary as a honeymooner to later creating magical experiences for our multigenerational family gatherings, every aspect of planning a vacation has been pure joy to me.  Learn More About Diane
