This is our first cruise, I've heard about fish extenders, but I'm not really sure what it is, how it works, or what I need to bring to be apart of it. Can you help fill me in on Fish extenders 101? Thanks in advance!

    Ahoy, Adam!

Thank you so much for stopping by the Moms Panel with your question! I'm happy to help fill you in on a favorite activity of many guests of Disney Cruise Line - Fish Extenders.

Fish Extenders are part of a fun "gift exchange" tradition created by fans of Disney Cruise Line. Fish Extenders are fabric pockets that guests hang from the metal fish wall ornament on the outside of their stateroom doors. (Thus the name!) Other guests bring little gifts to share with other cruisers who participate, and leave trinkets and surprises in the pockets during the cruise. It's like having a Disney Cruise Line "Secret Santa"!

Cruisers interested in participating in the fun can find more information on Disney Cruise Line discussion boards such as DISBoards.com, or by googling "DCL Fish Extenders". There's lots of information out there! There are Facebook groups where guests sailing on a particular cruise can meet up and plan a Fish Extender exchange. To find these groups, simply search for your ship name and cruise date on Facebook. You can purchase custom made Fish Extenders on craft sites such as Etsy, or make your own. While I don't participate in the gift exchange fun on every sailing, I really enjoy seeing the creative ways guests create their own personal Fish Extenders. It's fun to walk up and down the hallways and see them hanging outside stateroom doors, just waiting to be filled with treats and trinkets!

I hope this helps answer your question, and I hope you have lots of fun making new friends and participating in this tradition! - Diane W.
