    Thanks for not (fast)passing by planDisney with your inquiry. The process for bypassing stand-by queues at Walt Disney World Resort theme parks has changed drastically from its inception in my childhood. I vividly remember my parents sending my tiny little legs to all the Lands of Magic Kingdom Park with the mission of collecting paper FastPasses for my family's favorite attractions. On our honeymoon in 2014, my husband and I were introduced to the new FastPass+ system, and we spent the next six years of our Disney Adult lives mastering its nuances. Since then, FastPass+ has been replaced with Disney Genie+ service, and honestly, my husband and I were a bit uneasy with this change initially as we were overwhelmed by the prospect of learning the new process. However, now that Walt Disney World is well into the Genie+ era, I can happily share that we were able to make the transition with ease, so I'm thrilled to introduce you to Disney Genie+ service so that you can maximize the magic on your vacation. 

    If you are hoping to bypass the standby queue for Walt Disney World Resort attractions, you will need to purchase Disney Genie+ service. With Genie+, you will be able to reserve Lightning Lane entries (this terminology has replaced ‘FastPass’) for select attractions in each theme park. Disney Genie+ service be purchased through the My Disney Experience mobile app beginning at midnight each day you have a valid theme park ticket linked to your account. The price of the service varies per day and will be listed at the top of the ‘Tip Board’ in your app. Genie+ is priced per person, so the rate listed in the app will be charged for each member of your selected party. Once Genie+ is purchased, you are eligible to make your first Lightning Lane selection at 7 AM. A single guest is eligible to purchase Genie+ and select Lightning Lane entries on behalf of other members of their party as long as they are linked and sharing plans through the Friends & Family list in the app. I typically purchase Genie+ and verify my party around 6:45 AM to ensure I'm able to secure an early return time for my first Lightning Lane selection of the day. There is no limit to the amount of Lightning Lane selections made in a single day, but you are not eligible to make a new selection until you have either redeemed your most recent Lightning Lane or two hours have passed since you made that selection.

    There are a handful of select attractions that offer the purchase of individual Lightning Lane entries. These attractions are not included in Disney Genie+ service and are purchased independently. Guests can purchase up to two individual Lightning Lane entries per day, with or without the purchase of Disney Genie+. For budgeting purposes, my husband and I often purchase Genie+ one day and prioritize individual Lightning Lanes the next. 

    A few noteworthy differences between the two offerings, all guests are eligible to make Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane selections at 7 AM while only guests of Disney Resort hotels (and select others) are eligible to purchase individual Lightning Lanes at that time. All other guests can make their purchase once the desired theme park opens for the day. Additionally, Genie+ Lightning Lane entry automatically populates the next available timeslot while individual Lightning Lane allows guests to choose the time that best fits their schedule from those available.
