How far are the drops on Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and do they go backwards?

I would consider Space Mountain a “wild-mouse” classic type coaster that just happens to be in the dark. There are tight turns, and bumps but no deep hills. Believe me, I do not like steep hills and I’ve been on Space Mountain many times.

If you are prone to motion sickness as I am,  you may want to re-consider riding or bring your motion sickness aids. (I use Bonine.) For those that dislike darkness, this is not for you. The dark enclosed space may bother folks with claustrophobia as well. For stats, the longest drop is 35 feet.

While my son likes to proudly state that this is “the wildest ride in the wilderness”, it’s really a tame roller coaster. I also have enjoyed this coaster many times but I have had to skip it when I’ve had enough motion for the day. It can be intense for small children and does go through some dark tunnels. There are no steep drops - the longest is 39 feet - but many twists and turns.

Neither of these excellent attractions go backwards.

Here’s an idea to help anyone that is torn between going on any WDW attractions:

Find actual ride video of the attraction. You’ll go on a virtual ride and can decide if it looks okay for you. I have also used this tool as a way to ease my son’s fears about a new ride that he would like to try. Sometimes, he’ll decide “no, thank you, not for me” and other times, he’ll decide to give it a try. Just go to your search engine, type in the name of the ride and follow it with the words “ride through”. You’ll get many helpful sites.

To enjoy a safe and fun trip, medical concerns should also be addressed with your doctor prior to your visit.
