We are a family of 5 using Genie+ (1 young). If we book a Lightning Lane, is it necessary to use Rider Switch? Are there benefits/situations when Rider Switch would be beneficial with Genie+? When would a new booking window open when using Rider Switch?

    Hi Becca,

Welcome back to planDisney and thank you for your question!

Rider Switch is such a convenient option for guests who have a child or non-riding guest in their party. When it comes to Disney Genie+ Service, if you select a Lightning Lane for all your guests, except for the non-rider, you don’t really need to use Rider Switch.

With a Lightning Lane you have a specified amount of time to go ride the attraction, so within that timeframe have one group ride and have them return to wait with the non-rider. Once that group has returned, have the second group scan into the Lightning Lane and ride the attraction. Super simple! In my opinion, there really isn’t an added benefit to using Rider Switch with Genie+ because either way, you’d do the same thing, split up into groups to ride the attraction.

Keep in mind that you aren’t able to book a new Lightning Lane until the one you have is used or two hours after you book your Lightning Lane (whichever comes first). This is really helpful because if you get a Lighting Lane for later in the day, you can book another within two hours instead of waiting all day.

Since you’ll have a non-rider in your party, make sure that you unselect them from the rides they don’t want to ride on when booking with Genie+. If you do accidentally book them, no worries, you can either cancel the Lightning Lane for that guest in your My Disney Experience app or they can just scan their MagicBand or ticket when everyone else does and wait with the other members of the group not riding in the first group. I will note that if your child meets the height requirement for the attraction and is somewhat interested in riding, but isn’t totally sure, you could go ahead and book them the Lightning Lane then make a decision right before the family taps into the ride.
