Hello, my family is taking a Western Caribbean DCL cruise this year which has a stop in Cozumel. When looking at port excursions, I only see 1 excursion that includes visiting Mayan ruins. Are the Costa Maya excursions also available from Cozumel?

Ahoy, Mary-Lynne! I’m sure that you are already counting down the days until you are sailing away on your Western Caribbean cruise and I am so glad that you came over to planDisney with your question because Cozumel is one of my absolute favorite ports of call.

I love booking Port Adventures with Disney Cruise Line because you are able to pick an experience that fits your needs, know that it has been thoroughly vetted, and there’s also the no-worry convenience of knowing that the ship will not leave you behind if there are any unexpected delays! Take it from someone who has experienced an excursion delay that returned me to the pier after the all-aboard time, that guarantee gives you peace of mind that you simply cannot put a price on.

Although the Disney Cruise Line website provides great overviews of the Port Adventures for different destinations, including those for your stop in Cozumel, the exact offerings for the dates of your specific sailing will not be available until the advance booking window opens. You will be able to start making reservations for the Port Adventures specific to your sailing once your cruise balance is paid in full and your advance booking window opens, which is determined by your Castaway Club membership level or status as a concierge guest. When your advance booking window opens, you can see exactly which activities can be booked for each day of your itinerary by looking online or at the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App

Unfortunately, due to the limited amount of time in each port, the Port Adventures listed on the Disney Cruise Line website for other ports of call like Costa Maya will not be available for your day in Cozumel.  Since Cozumel is an island and Costa Maya is on the southeastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, it would take many hours and multiple forms of transportation to get you there, which simply isn’t feasible in the time the ship will be docked.

However, if you are interested in seeing Mayan ruins and it is available during your sailing, I strongly encourage you to consider booking the “Cozumel Ruins, Chocolate and Beach Break (CZ80)” Port Adventure.  My husband and I did that exact excursion a few years ago and it was one of our favorites because it gave you so many different experiences in one day.  It includes a visit to the San Gervasio Mayan Archaeological Site, a scenic drive around the entire island, a chocolate workshop at the Mayan Cacao Company, and a short beach break too. You will get the opportunity to learn about the largest archaeological ruins of a Pre-Columbian Mayan civilization on the entire island of Cozumel, while also getting a unique lesson in the historical importance of the Mayan cacao. (Also, the Mayan Cacao Company has a frozen chocolate slushie drink available in the gift shop that will change your life.)

No matter which excursion you choose, be sure to enjoy every minute of your Western Caribbean cruise. Happy sailing!
