Hi Moms! My family will be taking our first WDW vacation together soon (acutally our first family vacation EVER!). Any suggestions what to do with our first day? We won't arrive until 4pm and we're staying outside the resort. My boys are 4 and 6.

    Hi Melissa,

There are a number of fun ways you can spend your day of arrival at Walt Disney World.  Personally I think that a character dining experience is a great way to kick off your family vacation.  Chef Mickey's is the classic character dining experience and since it is located in Disney's Contemporary Resort, you don't even need a theme park ticket to access the restaurant.  Imagine dining with your sons as Mickey comes by the table to visit and the iconic monorails glide overhead.  That's a pretty memorable way to spend your first evening.  If this plan appeals to you, call (407) WDW-DINE up to 180 days before your arrival to book an advance dining reservation.  This restaurant is very popular so definitely make reservations if you wish to dine here.

Another fun choice for your first day is to head to Downtown Disney.  I bet your boys would love the Lego store there.  You'll find many wonderful restaurants too.  T-Rex is a favorite restaurant among little boys.  Shopping in the World of Disney store is one of my favorite things to do in all of Walt Disney World.

Finally, you may want to consider watching the evening fireworks from the back of Disney's Polynesian Resort.  Grab dinner at Captain Cook's (the quick service restaurant on the ground floor of the Great Ceremonial House) and then head out to the beach behind the resort.  Watch the Electrical Water Pageant as it glides by and then enjoy the fireworks as they erupt over Cinderella Castle.  It's a magical way to kick off your family vacation.

Let us know if you need any additional suggestions.  We've got plenty!
