We are a family of 6 taking our first Disney vacation in August '08, with our children ages 7, 9 (boys) & 15, 17 (girls). Due to budget, we are staying off-property this trip. Other than the parks, what are some of the Disney places we can visit?

Disney World is HUGE. It does of course include the four major theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios. It also includes two water parks: Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. A major themed shopping and entertainment area, Downtown Disney, and a minor themed shopping and entertainment area, the Boardwalk. Also there are two miniature golf courses and several real golf courses, as well as the Disney Wide World of Sports complex. Last but not least, there are more than 20 resort hotels. Many of the hotels have restaurants, recreation areas, and shops that can be enjoyed by any WDW guest.

You are welcome to participate in any of these activities. In this list, some of the more budget friendly items include mini-golf and window shopping at Downtown Disney. You could also rent boats or bikes at one of the Disney hotels and explore the beautiful grounds of the WDW resorts. To give you a better sense of everything there is to do at WDW, I recommend that you purchase (or check out from the library) a good WDW guidebook. My favorite is the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, but there are several others as well.

With good planning, a Disney vacation doesn't have to be expensive.

Hope you have a great trip!
