My family will be staying at WDW from 9/18-9/25 2013. My husband has severe gout and walking long distances and standing hurts his joints pretty bad. We are concidering a wheelchair/scooter if he needs one. Are there any other things we should know?

Hi Elizabeth! I understand your concerns for your husband. During September it is still quite hot during the day and the important thing for everyone is to keep yourselves hydrated.

Since the parks are all large and you will be doing a lot of standing and using time in lines I suggest you do consider a wheelchair for your husband. If he is not familiar with the scooters it is best to just rent a normal wheelchair. You can do this at the parks but those must stay in the parks or you can use an outside company who will deliver to the resorts for use during your entire stay. The electric scooters are not as easy to manipulate and can cause undo stress and with my mother we find it more fun and easier to use a normal chair. We take turns pushing her around and making sure she has a fun experience during her stay. When you use a wheelchair you can easily get in and out when necessary.

When you have a guest in a chair the cast members at each attraction will assist you if there is an alternative entrance. My mother prefers to often leave the chair behind and park it and wait in the line with other guests as long as it isn't too long. There are so many fun things to see in so many of the new queues for the attractions that you can miss out if you use the alternate entrance. Toy Story Mania and Haunted Mansion are just two that come to mind. Guest Assistance Cards are not necessary for those who have visible needs such as wheelchairs as the cast members are aware of what to do.

Have a super magical time during your vacation in September!
