Can family members in the same party on MDE make separate lightning lane reservations?

    Hi Stephen!

I'm so glad you've found your way to planDisney –– thanks for stopping by with your question today.  I know firsthand that planning a Walt Disney World Resort vacation for a group comes with its own challenges, especially when not everyone wants to do the same thing at one time. But the great news is that the My Disney Experience app makes it really easy to do things like book Genie+ Lightning Lanes, join the walk-up list for dining reservations, enter a virtual queue, and so much more, even if your entire traveling party isn't planning to do those things together. Let me explain how this process works so you'll be ready to hit the ground running during your upcoming visit.

When it's time to make your Lightning Lane selections using the My Disney Experience mobile app, you'll be prompted to choose the members of your party who will be booking that experience from your Friends & Family list. While you'll have the option to choose any of those people who have purchased the Genie+ service for the day, you'll be able to select as many or as few people as you'd like. Once you do, you'll be able to finish booking your Lightning Lane selection for the Guests you've included in your party. When it's time to make your next selection, you'll be able to choose your party all over again –– this means that if one of your friends wanted to sit out for Space Mountain, but would like to join you for a Doom Buggy ride through Haunted Mansion, you'll be welcome to add them to the group. Not only that, but any Guests who aren't included in your first Lightning Lane selection will still have the option to book their own experience, as well. So, if half of your party wants to set sail with Caribbean Pirates while you speed through Outer Space, they'll be welcome to book their own selection, as well.

I really loved this My Disney Experience feature during our family's most recent vacation.  Because we were traveling with a group ages 3-75, we definitely had different priorities when it came to making our Lightning Lane selections. For us, it worked out really well –– while my husband and I booked Lightning Lanes like Splash Mountain with our big kids, we were also able to make slightly-tamer Lighting Lane selections (like Dumbo The Flying Elephant) for the grandparents and preschoolers to enjoy. Then, when we were ready to choose a Lightning Lane that worked for everyone, we were still able to enjoy those attractions as a big group.  I hope it helps make your visit as flexible as it did for us!

Thanks so much for visiting planDisney, Stephen.  I'm wishing you lots of pixie dust during your upcoming visit to Walt Disney World Resort!

    Happy Planning,
