Family of 5 (kids, 12,9,5) planning a trip to Disney in Oct. Deciding between All Star family suites and FW cabins. Is the extra cost for the cabins worth it (plus golf cart rental)? Preferences? Pros/cons?

    Jennifer:

Both offer about the same square footage, a private bedroom, and common living area...but from there, it depends on whether your family enjoys spending time together outside the parks or if you see yourself simply getting up and heading to the parks each day.

The family suites have two things going: 1) two bathrooms and 2) price.  The music theme isn't as appealing as the All-Star Movie resort.

The cabins, in my opinion, have a lot more to offer:
    • A grill and full-size kitchen (not to mention dishwasher!) vs.microwave and mini-fridge, allowing you to cook a few good meals to offset the cost of the upgrade.
    • A deck and access to the outdoors.  October weather in Florida makes this an even bigger attraction.
    • The boat ride to Magic Kingdom vs. all-bus transportation from All-Star Music to the parks.  Add the ability to see the Magic Kingdom fireworks and water pageant from the beach of Fort Wilderness, and you've hit a homerun!
    • FREE campfire sing-a-along with Chip 'n' Dale and outside Disney movie.
    • Campers will have their campsites decorated for Halloween.  Golf cart rentals are $54 plus tax a day right now, so I don't recommend one for the entire week if you're on a budget.  But I do suggest getting one for just a day/night to see all the decorations.
    • Amenities like the pool, horse barn (where they keep the horses from Main Street), boat/canoe rentals and the cheapest buffet (Trail's End Buffeteria) on Disney property give it the leg up in my book!
    Wishing you a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
