My family of four (which will include a 7 y/o son and 4 y/o daughter) are planning our first trip to Disney World in April, 2020 for 1 week. When do we start the real planning? And what should we do/book first? I'm anxious to get going!!! Thanks!!

    Hi Rebecca,

In my opinion, planning a Walt Disney World Resort vacation is half the fun, and there's no time like the present to start! It's a great way to extended the magic of your vacation out for an entire year or more!

The first step will be to decide where you want to stay and how many days you'd like to visit the theme parks. While room-only reservations may be booked up to 499 days in advance, vacation packages usually become available to book mid-June of the year prior to your visit, so for you, that's this June! Hooray! In the meantime, I'd encourage you to watch Disney videos with your kiddos, read along here at the Disney Parks Moms Panel, and watch some great online planning videos. The more familiar you become with the theme parks, attractions, characters, and Resort hotels, the more equipped you'll be to put together the perfect itinerary for your family, plus you'll burst with excitement when you arrive at those magical welcome gates.

Beyond that, you'll want to be prepared to make dining reservations beginning 180 days in advance. That sounds early, but believe me, some restaurants fill up very quickly! If you're staying at a Disney Resort hotel, you'll have the added benefit of being able to make reservations for the entire length of your stay, up to 10 days, at that 180-day point. Another perk for Disney Resort hotel Guests is that you can make your FastPass+ selections for up to 14 days beginning 60 days before your check-in date. If you're staying elsewhere, you'll be able to make FastPass+ selections one day at a time, 30 days in advance.

Thanks so much for stopping by the Disney Parks Moms Panel again, Rebecca, and please keep bringing us more great questions. I'm SO excited for you and hope that your first Disney vacation is truly magical!
