Christmas at resorts

My family has a "down day" and we'd like to see all the ginger bread houses (minus the Epcot one) at Disney World but are staying off property. Is there a best route to see all the displays using Disneys tranportant between locations?

Why hello there Theresa, it's great to have you here at planDisney as you prepare for your holiday adventure!

I'm a big fan of having what you call a "down day" outside of the theme parks, especially since you'll be visiting at a time of year when thousands of other folks and families decide to descend upon Orlando en masse to celebrate the holidays at Walt Disney World Resort. I'm also a fan of charting out a course and strategizing the best way to get around using complimentary Disney Resort Hotel transportation and recently spent a day venturing around to check out all of the Gingerbread Displays this year (houses or otherwise), and I'm happy to help you plan the best route to do this from my personal experience:

    • Since you're not staying at a Disney Resort Hotel and not planning on driving your own vehicle between destinations, the most convenient location for guests to be able to park their own vehicle and also have transportation readily available is at Disney Springs. The buses here currently take guests to the various Disney Resort Hotels though it's important to be mindful of operating hours (currently anticipated to begin at 10:00 A.M. on the date of your visit) and just how hectic this can be with the hustle and bustle of last-minute holiday shopping.
    • I recommend starting off at the location furthest from the rest, by taking a bus to Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge in order to visit Ginger and Debra, the "Life-Size Baby Gingerbread Giraffe and Baby Zebra" found in the lobby of Jambo House. From here, I would take bus transportation to Disney's Hollywood Studios for the next leg of your journey.
    • Once you're at Disney's Hollywood Studios it'll be quicker to hop on the Disney Skyliner over to Disney's BoardWalk in order to check out the "Holiday Carousel" at Disney's Beach Club Resort before trekking over to the "BoardWalk Deli Gingerbread House" in the lobby of Disney's BoardWalk Inn. (I personally cut through EPCOT to see the gingerbread Spaceship Earth in CommuniCore Hall, but since you're skipping this one your best bet from this location is to take another bus from Disney's BoardWalk Inn to Magic Kingdom Park.)
    • From Magic Kingdom Park, I would hop on the Resort Monorail travelling clockwise to Disney's Contemporary Resort first to glimpse this year's "Castle Display" featuring an array of lights designed by Walt Disney Imagineers as an homage to the Cinderella Castle Dream Lights of years past. From here, your last stop is just another monorail ride away past the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) and Disney's Polynesian Village Resorts!
    • Completing your journey on the other side of the Seven Seas Lagoon at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, we're saving the biggest (and certainly the most popular) for last. Expect to spend a bit of time waiting among crowds of gingerbread connoisseurs to snap a shot or snag a snack, but it's certainly a bit intense compared to the more laid-back experiences at the previous spots. Once you're done, it's just a simple bus back to Disney Springs to end your day!

Wishing you all the best on your gingerbread quest!
