My family will be in Disney Dec 2-8. I was thinking about surprising my 15 and 12 year old kids with horseback riding at Fort Wilderness. I am wondering if it is worth the money and if my kids will enjoy it.

Hi Pattie!  I just happened to take the horseback trip a week ago while I was down on vacation and staying in Fort Wilderness!

The first thing the kids must understand is that the horseback trip will be completely at a walk.  Sometimes the younger set want to gallop and trot for the hour so they need to know up front so they are not disappointed.  We had about ten in our group but I also saw many groups go out with only three or four.  The horses were beautiful and very well mannered with their biggest flaw being that they all wanted to eat constantly!  Two guides went out with us and we spent the time on trails through the woods surrounding Fort Wilderness.  We came upon about five deer......they were either sleeping in the woods just off the trail or feeding fairly close to the trail. The horses were not bothered by them at all....phew!

If you love horses and looking for a nice relaxing experience then this is perfect.  If you think this would be fun for your children then definitely book it as a nice surprise.  When the ride is over take the bus to the Settlement Post where they can also visit the barn that houses the Disney horses you see on Main Street etc.  If you see Khan, he is the horse that takes the Headless Horseman down Main Street during Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.  You can also visit the Settlement Store, rent some fast water sprites at the marina, and have a great buffet lunch at Trails End.  It would definitely be a fun experience for the whole family!
