Hi Faith-- I would like to run in the Disney Princess Half in 2016. My first race. My question is do you have any advice on how to train for the race and how to start running? Everything I'm reading is for those that can run for over 3 miles as a beginner

    Hi, Michelle!

Welcome to the wonderful world of runDisney! I am so excited to hear you are ready to begin your running fairytale by participating in the 2016 Disney Princess Half Marathon. So let's get you started!

My biggest piece of advice in beginning your journey is to utilize the run/walk method created by Olympian and official runDisney Training Consultant, Jeff Galloway. This method has been proven over and over to be the most effective way to ward off injury and improve recovery. By allowing your body strategic walk-breaks at timed intervals you can run farther, faster, and still function post-race or post training session. And when you're running in the most magical place on earth, being able to enjoy your time in the theme parks is essential.

You can even get a training plan designed by Jeff Galloway specifically for the Princess Half Marathon for free on the runDisney website! The best part, there is a training plan designed for beginners that are just starting out or have been running for less than six months. Select the highlighted link above to access all of Jeff's training plans. They're complementary!

Additionally, I suggest putting your training runs on your calendar, like you would any appointment that is important. By making your training runs a priority, and not an optional activity, you will set yourself up for success - after all,  goals without a timeline are just dreams, and we want this dream to become a reality! I also suggest letting your friends and family know about your goals. Not only for accountability, but for support.

I hope this information is helpful and has you excited, Michelle! Don't forget, you can send me any questions you may have along the way. I am here to help!

    Happy Training!
