Welcome back, Emily!
Temperatures in California can be pretty warm in both May & September. In fact, three of the last four Disneyland Half Marathon Weekends I have participated in have seen above-average temperatures and humidity - usually more of an issue for September than May. Luckily, having those warm weather race experiences does help me to relay some tips for warm weather running. Plus, I have to train all summer in South Carolina; hot and humid!
• Hydrate early, hydrate often! Not just while you are running, but for the week leading up to the race and especially 48 hours before you travel.
• Use Jeff Galloway's run/walk method to allow your body to gradually warm up and to keep you from overheating.
• Slow your running pace! Especially if race time temps are higher than 60 degrees. This will also make it easier to take in your race experience.
• If you plan to wear a costume, consider one that has removable layers so you can stay cool as you warm-up.
• Eat a lot of water-based fruits. Watermelon, cucumbers and cantaloup have a high water content that help to not only provide important nutrients, but also hydration.
• Pack a few salt tabs in your fuel belt. Just in case you begin to cramp and need the sodium.
• Take advantage of all the on-course water stops and alternate between Powerade & water.
