We are so excited to be taking our first cruise (Alaska) in a couple weeks. Is it necessary to have cash for tips? Also we're used to sleeping with a box fan, any ideas of what to do since that's not an option onboard? Thanks!

    Hi, Michele!

Disney Cruise Line operates on a cash-free system, and all onboard purchases will be applied to your Key to the World Card. Your Key to the World will be issued upon check-in at the Cruise Terminal, and you'll be asked to provide a credit card to link to your stateroom account. That being said, there are still a few instances where you'll need to have cash on hand:

Room Service - Room Service is included in the cost of your cruise, and is available 24 hours a day! Craving a sandwich at 2am? No worries! While the food is included in your cruise cost, tips for the cast members that deliver it to you are not. We usually keep small bills on hand to tip the awesome folks that help with midnight snacks delivered to our stateroom!

Port Adventures - You may want to tip guides that host your Port Adventures, or keep cash on hand for snacks/souvenirs when you venture off the ship in port.

    Porters/Luggage Handlers
    - It's customary to tip the folks handling your luggage before and after your cruise. We usually tip a dollar per bag for anyone who assists us in getting our luggage to the terminal. When we disembark, we usually take advantage of the porters available to help with our bags as we go through customs. We typically tip the post-cruise porter two dollars per bag.

As for the fan, if it's the noise you need, there are lots of apps available on smart phones that mimic the sounds of box fans. I can't sleep in a silent room, so I use a "noise" app with fan/wave sounds to help me sleep when I cruise. Works like a charm! The app I'm using now is called "Sleep Machine". If you use the fan for the breeze, you can always turn the temp down low in the room to keep it cool when you sleep.

I hope this helps! Have a magical day! - Diane W.
