Everywhere has stated that reservations for dining must be made no earlier than 180 days in advance, but when I checked in to book for our trip in Apri,l 6 months away, it was allowing me to book some of my meals. I'm confused.

Dining reservations for most locations can be made up to 180 days in advance, Laura.  There is a perk, though, for guests staying at a Disney resort.  That is, those guests are able to make dining reservations for up to ten days of their vacations 180 days from their arrival date.  In other words, if you are staying for a week, you don't have to call back each day to make reservations for the week; you can make reservations up to 190 days from the date your trip begins.  I hope that makes sense.  That may very well be what you experienced when you logged on and booked your reservations.  Don't worry; you were perfectly within the rules!  Have a great time!
