Hi, Susan! Although I really recommend planning, if you prefer to just go where the pixie dust takes you, then that is what you should do! There are few things you need to know if you plan to go this route. The big one is you will probably not be able to do any character dining, and Table Service meals will be very difficult to get into without a reservation (especially for a large party of 7 like your family.) Also, without some plan, you might miss out on some great attractions or entertainment without knowing what the schedules are.
So let me give you a bit of advice - do a LITTLE planning! Not so much as to overwhelm you, but enough that you have the basics covered!
*If your park tickets are not included in your vacation package, buy these ahead of time. You can do so at your local AAA office, the Disney Store,
www.undercovertourist.com, or www.disneyworld.com.
*Book a FEW meals at (407)WDW-DINE or on-line. Because you don't want to feel trapped with a schedule, book early breakfast reservations or late dinner reservations. This way, the meals will not interfere with your daily plans. With your week long vacation, you might appreciate a few table service meals.
*Look though the Disney website and pick a few "must see" attractions, quick service restaurants, and nighttime shows (Wishes, Fantasmic, Illuminations.)
So go ahead and make those few reservations, get your tickets, and go and enjoy your WDW vacation! If you get to WDW and decide you want a bit more structure, see your resort concierge to see if they can book you some meals and review the park maps and transportation with you. Have a great time!
