What is the etiquette for dining with a booked reservation, if a line has formed outside the restaurant. Do we go forward and announce ourselves and booked reservation time, or join the line outside the restaurant.

Hello Gerard and thank you for asking the Disney Parks Moms Panel such a great question about etiquette.
I understand your query fully because I'm a Brit and holidaying abroad in the USA I can often find myself in awkward situations and certainly don't wish to make a faux pas or cause any undue offence!
If I were in your given situation I would politely ask the family at the end of the formed queue if they had an Advanced Dining Reservation for that restaurant or were they hoping to get a table as 'walk up' diners; should they have an Advanced Dining Reservation I would wait patiently behind them, if not I would say 'Excuse me' and go straight to the restaurant podium and speak to the Cast Member on duty there.
It's worth remembering if a restaurant is super busy and has formed an usually long queue, there sometimes is an extra Cast Member with an ipad checking Guests in whilst they wait in-line.
Generally speaking don't worry too much as everyone is just like you and vacationing in the most magical place on earth and for the most part should be happy and quite obliging!
If I can help you further plan your upcoming vacation to Walt Disney World Resort please come back and ask me another question.
    Have a great Disney day.
