Does Epcot celebrate the lantern festival in China?

    Hi Rachel,

    Wow, that's a great question!

It just so happens that I was in Epcot a few years ago during the first day of the Chinese New Year. I seem to recall some special events (e.g. storytelling, performances, etc.), however, it was pretty low key in terms of how they spread the word about these festivities. (I just stumbled upon them accidentally.)

Since the Lantern Festival is at the end of the Chinese New Year, instead of at the beginning when I was there, I can't speak from personal experience as to how they've chosen to celebrate that particular day in the past.

However, I can say from personal experience that each country's pavilion does vary it's annual celebrations of key holidays (e.g. Bastille Day in France, Cinco de Mayo in Mexico, etc.). So, my best advice would be to chat with either the cast members or the international hosts/hostesses in the China pavilion before or during the upcoming Chinese New Year to see if they have the inside scoop.

Here's a little tip from your buddy Derek:

If you're looking for a really cool and unique souvenir to bring home to a friend or family member, wind your way to the back of the China pavilion and browse through the House of Good Fortune shop. My favorite souvenirs to stock up on are the sets of baoding balls (the ornate balls that you rotate repeatedly in the palm of your hand).

I keep a stash of them in my closet in case I forget a birthday, anniversary, or some other special occasion and I need a gift fast. (I used to keep a stash of waffle irons, but now all of my friends have one thanks to me.)

I hope that helps! Please feel free to write back if you should have any additional questions and I'll be happy to help in any way that I can.

    Best regards,
    Derek
