Going to DW end of June. Son is 11. He & husband going to convention 2 days. I'll be on my own some. Trying to decide between POR and FW. Last time to DW, son was 6. POR has boat to DD & great pools. Is the upgrade to FW worth it? Thanks

    Elizabeth:

I am assuming that you are trying to decide between Port Orleans Riverside and a Fort Wilderness (FW?) cabin...if I'm wrong, send me another question directly to me through my bio page...

Even though I'm probably the fort's biggest fan on the Mom's Panel, the upgrade may actually not be worth it if you're wanting a resort that is friendly for you while your son and husband are away. It doesn't sound like you're looking to curl up with a good book or simply enjoy walking outdoors and exploring nature, but rather wanting to sit by the pool or shop....

Indeed Port Orleans offers a good pool with even a jacuzzi. And you're right, the boat to Downtown Disney makes it the best value of the Moderate resorts in my opinion.  At Fort Wilderness, it does sport two pools, but the quiet pool is small and unmemorable and the large one is on par with PORs, except for its water play station--great if your son was half his age. The pier from the cabins at the fort is quite a ways from the cabins, so expect to take one of the internal buses or rent a golf cart. And the expense of the golf cart on top of the upgrade may not be in your budget at $54 a day plus tax. If you enjoy exploring other resorts, the fort certainly offers it with its boat to The Contemporary and Wilderness Lodge, but worth the upgrade? I doubt it. I would rather upgrade to the Swan/Dolphin or Beach Club.

I can't believe I'm encouraging you not to explore my favorite resort, but I don't know that it would be a good fit for what I feel you're looking for--especially for the added expense.

    Wishing y'all a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
