We are going to DW on 09/14 to 9/20 with our daughter who will be 5 on 09/16/2013 and our 20 month old son. What's the best itinerary for us to visit all the theme parks and also something special for her 5th birthday?

    Hi Simi,

First and foremost, I'd like to wish your daughter a very happy birthday.

I apologize for the delay in our response. I see that you're currently visiting Walt Disney World, so you may have already experienced a number of the awesome attractions and shows in the theme parks.

While I think I missed the opportunity to help you plan out your itinerary, I think there's still time for me to share an idea for a special birthday surprise (albeit a little belated) for your daughter before it'll be time to head back home.

How about if you were to sneak into one of the gift shops and purchase a Disney Gift Card? While they're really cool gifts by themselves, you could include a note that promises a return trip to Walt Disney World for a future birthday (whenever it would be appropriate for your family's finances).

It's a scientifically-proven fact that heading home is the saddest part of a Disney vacation. (Well, I may be stretching the truth a bit there!) You can make it a happy time by surprising your daughter with the gift card and the attached note.

That should certainly soften the blow of leaving Walt Disney World and also give her something to look forward to as she think about the souvenirs she'll want to buy with that gift card when you return for her next birthday celebration.

    (Don't worry...Disney Gift Cards don't expire!)

Here's a little tip from your buddy Derek:

Consider taking the time to help your daughter prepare a scrapbook of pictures and other mementos (e.g. theme park maps). My daughter loves looking through the scrapbooks she's done with my wife and it helps her to remember all of the fun experiences we had during our Disney vacations.

I hope that helps and I hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation!

    Best regards,
    Derek
