Congratulations on your upcoming inaugural DVC vacation! You've asked a great question, and believe me it took me awhile to understand why anyone would want to spend more cash after making this significant investment.
Basically it comes down to is maximizing the use of your vacation points. The point requirement for Friday and Saturday night stays is significantly higher than those for Sunday-Thursday stays. Let me use my recent experience as an example: I booked a trip to Hilton Head Island during Dream Season; the points for Sunday-Thursday were 31 per night (for a 2-BR villa). We wanted to stay Saturday night as well, but it would be an additional sixty-nine points! That is more than double the amount points for the non-weekend nights. By paying cash for that one night, at a great member discount rate of $262.00 (subject to availability), I now have the ability to use those sixty-nine points for another trip. These points will cover our entire stay in a studio over the Princess ½ Marathon weekend in March 2010. If I had to pay for this room outright I could be looking at $400+ per night. So for my “cash” room at Hilton Head Island for the one night, I earned myself three more nights at Walt Disney World! Confused? I’ll call it fuzzy math, and it may not work for everyone – but it enables us to maximize the amount of time we spend on vacation. Banking and borrowing is a fantastic feature, however since we vacation several times each year there is never anything left to bank and we don’t want take away from our future vacations. We have found that paying “cash” for a night here and there increases our vacation opportunity, without having the added investment and commitment that an additional point investment would require. I hope this helps – enjoy your membership, it certainly is magical!
