We are driving to Disney from Illinois and will be arriving earlier than the check in time. Will we be able to get our tickets from our resort so we can spend part of the day at a park?

Hi Rachel!  You can check-in at your Disney resort at any time on your arrival day.  They can not guarantee your room being ready before 3:00PM but that does not mean you can't enjoy the parks and facilities before you get into your room.  You can check in and get your park tickets and even your room keys.  You will not be given a room number at this time if the room is not ready but you simply leave your cell phone number and they will text or call you when it is ready and leave the specific room number.  You will not need to return to the front desk but instead can go directly to the room assigned to you.  You can store your luggage with the bell services and once you reach your room call them and they will deliver your bags as quickly as possible.  It is a wonderful service for the guests and it allows families to not waste a minute before their fun can start!
