I have Disneyland tickets (and park reservations) for August. Can I buy and add Genie+ to my reservation now (I didn't buy Genie+ when I bought the tickets), or do I now have to wait to buy Genie+ once I am in the park?

    Welcome BACK, Joanna!

It's so good to see your name pop back up in our system with another great Disneyland Resort vacation planning question! I'm Kristen, and I'm happy to be your planEAR today!

Oh Joanna! Your visit to Mickey's original house is so soon! I know you must be getting oh so excited! I'm excited for you!! Currently, there are only two times when Guests can add the new Disney Genie+ Service to their Theme Park Admission Tickets; the first is at the time of their ticket purchase, and the second is adding it on the morning of Disney day after you've already scanned into your first theme park.

I'm the person who likes to pre-pre-prepare, and the first time I went to Disneyland Resort without having the Disney Genie+ Service already linked to my tickets was a bit nerve-racking. But I actually like this style of Disneying a lot better now that I've done it for two reasons:

    1) At Disneyland Resort, Guests can only make Genie+ Lightning Lane selections once they've already entered the theme park. (Unlike Walt Disney World Resort, where Guests can start making selections at 7:00 A.M. whether they're already in a park or still in bed at their hotel.) Not only are you not really losing that much time by not having the purchase pre-loaded, the purchase takes maybe two minutes in the Disneyland Mobile App. (Another bonus of Disneyland Resort is that a lot of the local Magic Key annual pass holders don't show up until mid-afternoon, so you're not competing with as many other guests to secure top attractions that early in the morning.)

    2) Had you included the Disney Genie+ Service with your initial ticket purchase, it would have auto-magically been included for each Disney day across all of your tickets. One of the major pros (to me, at least) to the day-of purchase option is that you only need to purchase Genie+ for those in your party who want to use it. It's almost like you could make the purchase for everyone on Day 1 to kind of test drive how much your party likes it; then, on day 2, those who want it can add it back and those who'd rather not can skip it.

Don't forget that there's a somewhat different but similar category called Individual Lightning Lanes; these are select attractions that can be purchased on a per-ride basis without the need to also purchase Genie+. The current attractions that participate as Individual Lightning Lanes are WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure and Radiator Springs Racers both in Disney California Adventure Park and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disneyland Park.

I hope that this helped to plan your upcoming Disney days, Joanna! Be sure to follow the official planDisney Panel Instagram account for even more tips and tricks. And if you have any more Disneyland Resort Vacation Planning Questions, We're All Ears!
