I am going to the disneyland resort with wife and toddler. Can 1 of us purchase a lightning pass and use rider switch for the other that doesn't or do we all have to purchase (just me and wife)?

Hi there, Gerald! Thanks so much for stopping by planDisney with your question. We love helping fellow Guests plan their magical vacations to the Happiest Place on Earth!

I'm so glad to hear that you are well versed in all things Genie+ and Rider Switch! Both will make for a smooth magic carpet ride through your Disneyland Day. I'm sure you're eager to get your Disneyland ducks in a row, so let's just dig into your question!

Each Guest looking to take advantage of Lightning Lanes on their own as or part of Rider Switch will need to have upgraded to Genie+. Rider Switch is designed for parties that include Guests that are not tall enough to ride a particular attraction or simply don't want to. By using Rider Switch, both guardians can experience the attraction with only one waiting in the actual attraction queue. When you arrive, the first thing to do is to ask a Cast Member if Rider Switch is available. If so, you will be divided into two groups - Party 1 and Party 2. Party 2 will include the Guest(s) that will not be riding and up to 3 people who will be riding once the switch happens. The Cast Member will scan your ticket and escort you to a designated area to wait. When Party 1 has experienced the attraction, they will switch with Party 2. At that point, Party 2 will go to the appropriate attraction entrance and have their ticket scanned again. It's at this point that all riders need to have Genie+ as you will not be able to enter a Lightning Lane without it even as part of the Rider Switch program.

I know this may not be the answer you were hoping for, but don't forget that in addition to access to those Lightning Lanes, Genie+ includes unlimited digital downloads of all the Disney PhotoPass photos you take that day! This is the best way to make those memories last forever! You can actually locate the PhotoPass photographers in your Disneyland Mobile App by tapping on the pinpoint icon in the bottom navigation bar and selecting "PhotoPass" from the drop-down menu on the next screen. If I know I want to get a few great family shots, I will take a peek at the app ahead of time and choose two locations where I know I definitely want to take a photo and plan it into our day. Don't be shy - you can have them take a few, and you'll want to ask for a Magic Shot, especially in Avengers Campus - TRUST ME!

Gerald, I sure hope this was helpful! If you have any more questions, you know where to find us here at planDisney!

    Magic awaits!
