Hello! We will be at Disneyland on Nov 30th and my daughter has celiac, a severe gluten allergy. Could you recommend some places and snacks in the park we could eat, & strategies for staying safe from cross-contamination?

Hi there, Jeff! Welcome to planDisney.

Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by with your question for us. I’m delighted to see you’re heading to the Happiest Place on Earth at the end of this month. As a pediatric nurse practitioner, I understand having a medical condition can seem daunting during travels. We recently ventured to Disneyland Resort with my son’s girlfriend who has celiac disease, but with some planning, we were able to navigate the parks safely and with ease.

As you make an advanced dining reservation (up to 60 days prior), be sure to indicate your party’s dietary restriction by selecting “wheat/gluten” in the “Dietary Requests” subheading. When dining at table service restaurants during our recent trip, we spoke with the chefs to discuss my son’s girlfriend’s severe gluten allergy. They were all very understanding and took her medical needs seriously. When we ate at Carthy Circle Restaurant, she was also provided options for modifications on certain dishes on the menu when speaking with the chef. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to speak with the chefs to discuss your daughter’s severe gluten allergy. While there is still a risk, the kitchen and dining staff take reasonable, cautious steps to avoid cross contamination.

There are many gluten-free options available at quick-service dining locations as well. A convenient way is to place your orders on the Disneyland Mobile App by choosing from the Gluten/Wheat Allergy Free menu. Some of our favorite items include the gluten/wheat allergy friendly toasted cheese sandwich with tomato basil soup from Jolly Holiday Bakery Café and gluten/wheat allergy-friendly pepperoni pizza flop-over at Café Daisy. When you pick up your mobile order, your food should come with an allergy pick. However, if the pick is missing, I recommend checking with the Cast Member to ensure the items have been prepared gluten-free. For a gluten-allergy friendly treat, don’t miss Dole Whip soft serve or float from Tiki Juice Bar

If it makes you feel more comfortable and reassured, you also have the option of bringing your own gluten-free food to enjoy during your visit to the parks.

I hope this information is helpful for you, Jeff. Please don’t hesitate to visit us on planDisney again if you have more trip-planning questions.

    Sending you pixie dust,
    Kiki
