Hi Lacey! Welcome to planDisney, and thank you for your family's service to our country.
My husband serves in the U.S. Navy, and we visited Walt Disney World Resort earlier this year to celebrate his return from deployment. Our visit happened to coincide with the 4th of July, so we had ALL the patriotic feels during our vacation. Grab a slice of apple pie and a hot dog as I give you a tour of All-American experiences for your Veteran's Day Disney visit.
If you'll be in Magic Kingdom Park that day, you won't want to miss the Flag Retreat. I cry every single time I watch the U.S. flag being lowered as the Star-Spangled Banner plays and Cast Members salute. You can learn more, and find the schedule, on the
Flag Retreat webpage.
This Disney Parks Blog article is a lovely tribute to this special moment. If your husband would like to volunteer to be the "Veteran of the Day" and participate in the ceremony, check in at Guest Relations in City Hall on Main Street, U.S.A., but please know that many people volunteer so he may not be selected.
Want to enjoy some all-American treats in Magic Kingdom Park? How about a delicious hot dog at Casey's Corner (my family carries ours over to the grassy area on the Hub in front of Cinderella Castle) or a turkey leg in Liberty Square. While you're over there, take in all the Disney details that honor the American Revolution (I love the liberty tree at twilight) and stop by the Hall of Presidents.
Let's jump on the monorail and head over to EPCOT for my very favorite patriotic experiences. In the World Showcase's America pavilion,
The American Adventure is a classic attraction that tells the story of U.S. history through audio-animatronics, video, and music. I always cry during the "Golden Dream" song at the end - I just got tears in my eyes thinking about it. You will both leave feeling so proud and hopeful about our country's future.
While you're in the America pavilion, be sure to see the
Voices of Liberty. This beautiful chorus is lovely every day of the year, but they add a holiday tag to their shows that is truly magical. If you're thirsty, the
Fife & Drum Tavern serves U.S. beers and some fun red, white, and blue non-alcoholic drinks. There's also excellent BBQ at the
Regal Eagle Smokehouse.
One last idea is to check to see if Shades of Green is offering a Veteran's Day meal. Shades of Green is the resort for military personnel and veterans on Walt Disney World property, and their staff are fantastic. If you're eligible to visit the resort (see the website for eligibility information), they also have a fantastic Exchange with military-themed Disney souvenirs.
Lacey, I hope you and your husband have a very special Veteran's Day together, filled with lots of smiles and laughter and also pride and reflection upon his service and sacrifice. Be sure to read the
Disney Parks Blog as you get closer to your visit, as they will share news of any patriotic treats or special events. Enjoy every minute!
Wishing you much magic,
Robyn
