We are going to Disney World Hollywood Studios & Animal Kingdom in less then a week. I see so many others have reservations at park restaurants for meals while at the Parks. Is this necessary, or will we be able to ample places to eat when we're hungry

It depends on where you want to eat and what time of year you'll be traveling.

There are plenty of counter service restaurants at WDW. These are places similar in concept to a fast food restaurant; there is a counter you walk up to, place your order, then take your tray of food back to a your table. The counter service restaurants focus on a variety of different foods, some offer BBQ, some offer pizza, etc. There are healthy options, including vegetarian dishes, salads, and fruit at a number of counter service venues. You should be able to eat a counter service meal with no issues at all in mid-October. However, during peak weeks such as Christmas and July 4, you could experience significant wait times even for a counter service meal.

In addition to counter service meals, there are table service restaurants. These range from casual, to elaborately themed, to gourmet, to meals with Disney characters. Many of these dining experiences are VERY popular and fully book many months in advance. Again, mid-October is a relatively low-crowd time to visit WDW. If you want table service dining, you should be able to get in somewhere as a walk-in. But you might not get your first choice of restaurant and you might not be able to dine at the exact time you want. If there is somewhere in particular that you really want to eat, I would call Disney Dining as soon as possible to arrange this. They can be reached at 407-WDW-DINE.

    Good luck!
