We are going to Disney in September. I have 2 children with autism and anxiety. Oldest son has difficulty walking long distances. Youngest is scared of everything and has significant behaviors and is a runner with huge meltdowns. HELP

    Hi Brandi ~

September is just around the corner and I bet you're too excited to sleep already!

The Walt Disney World Resort is committed to assisting Guests with all of types of special needs including those with autism. They have put together A Resource for Guests with Cognitive Disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) that is available online by clicking on the link I've provided you. That will give you some great information that will help you before and during your trip.

You can request Disability Access Service (DAS) for your children by visiting Guest Relations at any of the four theme parks. Cast Members will ask you some questions so that they can best accommodate their specific needs. You will not be required to provide any type of supporting documentation to the Cast Members. Here is a link with some details explaining how DAS works.

You could try watching videos of attractions on YouTube with your youngest child and talk about what to expect. It may be helpful to rent a wheelchair for your oldest son. If your children have any comfort items including electronics, bring them if possible. If they have headphones or ear plugs to help keep the noise level down, bring them. If they become anxious, remember to relax and remove them from the situation until they calm down. There are quiet places in the parks to give them a break.

I am limited in space but please come back if you have any additional questions.

Wishing you minnie magical memories :-) Allison V.
