We will be going to Disney in October 2011. I am aware that you need to make dinner reservations, but are lunch reservations truly needed? I will have a 5 year old and 2 year old and would like to be more spontaneous and allow them to make some choices.

There is room for spontaneous no worries.  I generally, go to the restaurant when it opens at 11 and ask if there are tables available, and have been successful most times.  The only restaurant that is virtually impossible to get into spontaneously has been the Le Cellier, located in EPCOT World Showcase.  It never hurts to ask, there are always cancellations and no shows.  Have a wonderful trip.
