Hello Disney gurus, I am surprising my brother for his 18th birthday in December by taking him to Disney...he's never been! I have everything planned out for us, but I am a little confused on the safari's in Animal Kingdom, can you elaborate?

Hi Catherine! You sound like a great sister surprising your brother for his birthday! I bet the two of you will have an awesome time!

Kilimanjaro Safaris is at the top of my “must do” list when I visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort. This is approximately 20 minute expedition in an open air vehicle that takes you deep into a real wildlife reserve. Your driver is extremely knowledgeable and teaches you and guides you along the way. Over 34 different species of exotic African wildlife are roaming the reserve.  Some of our favorite animals to watch are the Elephants, Giraffe’s, and we even have gotten to see a gorgeous Lion napping on top of a rock. This is a ride and most times the vehicle does not stop but only comes to a slow crawl. However the animals sometimes seem so close that you almost feel like you can touch them. People have said that this is the best safari they have ever experienced. Just a quick hint, Kilimanjaro Safaris are eligible for the Fastpass+ program. This is a great way to secure a time and skip the line!

If you have extra cash I highly recommend the Wild Africa Trek at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This is a 3-hour safari that offers some behind the scenes magic. You will trek across a rope bridge and be able to marvel at the crocodiles and ride in a safari vehicle and get a great view of the giraffes among other animals. Your guide will teach you about the operational side of caring for the animals and you also will receive photos from your journey. After you complete your adventure you will be treated to some delicious African style snacks!

I hope I have helped to answer your question! Have a magical time and Happy Birthday to your brother!
