Hi Amy!
I'm so excited to hear that you are planning a trip to Walt Disney World in October, it is one of my favorite times of the year to visit! The cooler weather,
International Food and Wine Festival at Epcot and
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party are a few reasons this is a great time of year to visit.
Disney's Dining Plan is a great option to add to your vacation, especially if you are going to be dining at any of the character meals. A favorite website of mine to look up menus and prices for dining locations is allears.net, it will usually contain a menu, when the menu was updated and prices for the meal when the menu was updated. For popular meals such as character meals, there will be a range of prices depending on what time of year you visit and even on what day you intend to dine. I will take an average for the costs of each persons meal and add tax to get a pretty good estimate of what each meal will cost. I find that if I am going to be doing at least one table service restaurant a day during my vacation, the dining plan does actually save me money especially when you have multiple children. For example a character meal at Chef Mickey's can cost around $20 per a child ages 3 to 9, the approximate dining plan price for a child ages 3-9 per a night of your stay for 2013 is $17 to $18 .
Character dining experiences are very popular so dining reservations are highly recommended, you can reserve your dining experience online or by calling (407)WDW-DINE.
I hope this helps and visit us again at Disney Parks Moms Panel if you have anymore questions!
Enjoy your "Disney Time!"
Mandy
