We are going to Disney in February and initially thought we did not need a car. We are going to be there for 8 days. What are your thoughts? If we do get a car where else is recommended we see and do around the Orlando area( we are doing the 4 parks)

    Hi Cindy!

Wow! I can imagine the excitement in your house with your trip to the Walt Disney World Resort fast approaching!

Generally, we fly and do not rent a car while there, but we have driven a rental car on a few occasions. We just returned from an 8-day trip where we drove our own car. On this most recent trip, we parked our car and did not move it during the entire trip. We utilized the Resort & Theme Park Transportation for the entire stay and loved having plenty of time to experience the parks and resorts.

Although you may enjoy having access to a vehicle, remember to review the parking fees and factor those into your budget for the trip. If you are not staying at a Walt Disney World Resort Hotel, having a car may be helpful, but, for us, we prefer not having to navigate the traffic while on vacation. If you do decide to rent a car, remember that you may not need it for the entire stay. Consider renting for a day or two! On two separate occasions, we visited the Kennedy Space Center and our girls absolutely loved the experience. I would recommend spending a day there if you have time. Get there early and go directly to the Space Shuttle Atlantis Zone!

Honestly, however, even with eight days, we still felt as if we needed more time to explore the Walt Disney World Resort and the theme parks. We were able to visit each park more than once and could make Fast Pass+ selections for different attractions on each of those days. Since several parks have a tiered Fast Pass+ system, we used our two days at Disney's Hollywood Studios to do two Tier One attractions. On one day, we chose Slinky Dog Dash and on another day, we chose Toy Story Mania! as our Tier One attraction.

With a number of shows and entertainment at each park and at Disney Springs, we always find a variety of activities. Be sure to check the entertainment schedule for the dates of your visit. We enjoy doing dining packages so that we can get access to a reserved seating area for shows. On our most recent visit, we did the Rivers of Light: We Are One Dining Package with Tusker House Restaurant and, in the past, we have done the Fantasmic! Dining Package with Hollywood & Vine Restaurant in Disney's Hollywood Studios. Several of our favorite experiences have come from the Enchanting Extras Collection. My family loved the Up Close with Rhinos tour on our most recent visit.

Cindy, I know you will find lots to do at the Walt Disney World Resort, but if you are looking for other free activities, visit the City of Orlando's online resources. Their Events Calendar currently lists free guided hiking tours through February. Be sure to check the special notes and guidelines for any experience to make sure it is suitable for your family!

Whatever you do, enjoy the time. It is precious and memories are priceless!

    Magic and memories,
