How do Disney fast passes work in 2024?

    Greetings and welcome to planDisney!

Thanks for bringing your question to us and I gather that, if you're familiar with the old FastPass system, then it's been a while since you've visited the Disneyland Resort. Let me be the first to welcome you back again! A lot has changed since the old paper FastPass system was retired, so let's get comfortable and I'll summarize the updates.

Walt Disney once said that "Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world." In 2021, the Disneyland Resort introduced Genie+, which is essentially an evolved FastPass system. Everything is handled within the Disneyland Mobile App on your smartphone device. Genie+ is a paid service which may be purchased either at the time of ticket purchase for your entire length of stay or on a daily basis after you've scanned into the Parks.

Having Genie+ will allow you to book Lightning Lanes for select attractions. Lightning Lanes allow you to bypass a majority of the standby queue for these attractions, thus getting you to the ride faster. You may book your first one after you enter the Parks. You can only book another Lightning Lane after:

    1. You've redeemed the Lightning Lane you're currently holding, or
    2. Two hours have passed since you booked the last Lightning Lane.

You may only use a Lightning Lane for an attraction once per day (you can ride standby as many times as you wish, however). Lightning Lane Return Times for the more popular attractions will book faster, so they will often be later in the day and may even run out. If you book a Return Time more than two hours ahead, I like to recommend setting an alarm to remind you when you are able to book another. By mid afternoon, Guests can sometimes have multiple Lightning Lanes "stacked" upon one another, which is a great strategy to get a lot done in a short amount of time.

At this time, there are two attractions which are Individual Lightning Lane purchases: Radiator Springs Racers and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. These are not included in Genie+ and are purchased separately.

The great thing about Genie+ is that all Disney PhotoPass downloads are included on the days that you've purchased Genie+! So feel free to make liberal use of those Disney PhotoPass photographers that you see because they'll be more than happy to capture your visit on camera. And all ride photos are included as well!

Phew! That was a lot of information but I hope I was able to clear some things up for you and provide some clarification. You'll be visiting when Season of the Force and Pixar Fest will both be happening throughout the Resort, so be ready for a galaxy far, far away by going to Infinity and Beyond!

If you have any more questions for us, please don't hesitate to ask. We'd love to hear from you again and you're always welcome at planDisney!

Wishing You a Great, Big, Beautiful Tomorrow!

Meet the Panelist: Al, California

Ahoy there from the heart of Steinbeck Country in central California! I've been visiting the Disneyland Resort since childhood and fell in love with the sense of absolute immersion that the Imagineers have achieved. My favorite attraction is Pirates of the Caribbean because where else can you go from a California day to an evening boat ride in the bayou with "salty old pirates"? I'm a veterinarian and an all-around Disney geek and enthusiast. I'd love to help you plan your next Disneyland trip! Learn More About Al
