Hi Tracie:
I love both Resorts and stayed at Wilderness Lodge just last month. The Resort was a blast for my family, and I did not notice that Wilderness Lodge needed a refresh. If commute to Magic Kingdom is a primary factor, you may want to stay at Wilderness Lodge as my boys love the boat ride to and from Magic Kingdom and treat the boat ride as an attraction. I've also noticed that most Disney Moms who have weighed in on the Animal Kingdom Lodge vs Wilderness Lodge debate
ultimately recommend Wilderness Lodge.
My view is a bit different. My family's favorite Resort is the Animal Kingdom Lodge. While I'm partial to the benefits and amenities of the Animal Kingdom Lodge, such as the savanna views, the fine dining, and the unique kid and family activities, the resort is sliiiightly further away from three of the parks than many other Disney properties. Many folks feel that Wilderness Lodge's proximity to Magic Kingdom to be a huge plus over Animal Kingdom Lodge's location. That being said, for me, the benefits of the AKL outweigh the extra minutes we may spend on the bus, particularly if you have a room with a savanna view. If you can't secure a savanna view, your two year old may prefer Wilderness Lodge.
Upon entering the Animal Kingdom Lodge, your family will be mesmerized by the dramatic lobby expertly themed and filled with African artwork, artifacts, a fireplace (at Jambo House), and huge windows. The pools are great at Animal Kingdom Lodge. AKL Jambo House is home to the 11,000 square foot Uzima pool. The pool boasts a 67-foot slide as well as a tyke-friendly wading pool area. AKL Kidani Village is home to the wonderful Samawati Springs pool and kids water playground.
Both Resorts feature regular hotels rooms or vacation club villas. Wherever you choose, enjoy your vacation.
