Debating whether to bring a car seat on the airplane... heard it can be a good idea since the little one is used to sitting in it and may sleep in it. Haven't traveled by plane with our kids before, ages 8 and 2. Three hour flight.

    Hi Crystal!

I have flown several times with my children (from Georgia to Southern California) and it can be tough to keep them occupied for so many hours. But with an 8 and 2 year old, you've got the odds on your side.

The only time it was worth it to me to was when the kids were in infant carriers. (But even then I didn't buy them an extra seat, I just hoped for an empty flight and asked to be switched next to the empty seats--no one ever cares because they want to be faaar away from babies and kids!) Also, car seat regulations are different than in the air. Once when I had my daughter strapped (happily) into the infant carrier, they made me unstrap her and take her OUT of the carseat until after takeoff. I still do not understand that!

In my opinion, for your age kids I would NOT bring a carseat. What I would do is take a bag of fun items they haven't seen before (especially things that take a long time to use: stickers, small puzzles or activity books), their favorite snacks and of course, anything you might have that's electronic (movies on the computer, portable DVD player or games on the iPod). The other thing that you've got in your favor is that you've got first-time flyers---it's just so exciting to be on a plane that that will be a great source of entertainment!
