I am debating staying at one of the three monorail hotels for convenience to MK and surrounding areas. My understanding is that there is no monorail to DD? What is the quickest way there from one of these hotels and back for dining?

In all honesty, the quickest way to get to Downtown Disney is by taxi. Oftentimes, all the Magic Kingdom resorts have available taxis ready to go, or the valet services will certainly arrange for one to be there quickly. Otherwise, you could certainly take advantage of Disney transportation to save your money for shopping! All the resorts have buses that will take you to Downtown Disney, but they sometimes share buses with other resorts and may stop at one of the water parks. When we stayed at the Polynesian this summer, the bus ride to Downtown Disney was about 25 minutes.
