Female relaxing in pool; laid back

My daughter had a cruise with her ex fiancée booked to leave Dec 7. They just broke up and must cancel. I have a cruise booked with my daughter for May. She purchased the insurance for the Dec trip. What are her options to cancel Dec?

    Ahoy, Patricia!

Welcome aboard planDisney! Breakups right before a cruise are about as welcome as Ursula at a pool party—and I’m really sorry your daughter is dealing with that. The silver lining? You two get to turn this May sailing into your very own mother–daughter adventure, and that’s the kind of story Maui would absolutely take credit for.

Once you catch your breath from it all, the first step is for your daughter to look over the Vacation Protection Plan she purchased for the December sailing. Policies can vary a bit depending on which state the Guest lives in, so it’s good to see exactly what’s included before taking action. After that, I always recommend calling Disney Cruise Line directly. Their Cast Members can walk her through all the options—and while I can’t promise pixie dust, sometimes it finds its way onto the call anyway.

Most cancellation benefits kick in for things like illness, injury, or other major life events—not heartbreak, unfortunately. (If they covered those, Tiana would’ve rewritten the policy years ago.) But the good news is that the plan typically includes a “Cancel For Any Reason Cruise Credit,” which can give your daughter a substantial credit toward a future sailing. It’s not a full cash refund, but getting 75% back in cruise credit is still a solid way to turn a rough moment into a future vacation win.

Another idea: depending on the reservation details, she may be able to remove her ex from the December cruise and add someone else—including you. There’s usually a fee, and it isn’t guaranteed, but it never hurts to ask. If Belle can talk her way out of a dungeon, you can definitely call to explore options.

And since all this definitely wasn’t in your daughter’s fairytale script, here’s a dose of encouragement just for her: this situation may feel like the part of the movie where the heroine hits rock bottom—but that’s always the scene right before the turning point. Whether she uses the credit to book something new, shifts the December plan, or finds an entirely different adventure, she gets to write the next chapter. And knowing Disney Cruise Line, it’s probably going to involve sunshine, ocean breezes, and at least one dessert that should be illegal for being that good.

I hope this helps her see the options a little more clearly and feel less stressed about making the right call. The combination of the protection plan, Disney Cruise Line’s friendly Cast Members, and the flexibility of future cruise credits can give her a smoother path forward than it may seem at first glance.

Sea ya real soon as the tides turn toward thankful hearts and joyful journeys,
    Dustin
