my dad died from cancer 4 days before our scheduled trip last month.( he was coming too). we are going in february to honor his birthday. what can we do special to honor his memory? The whole family is going.my 12 yr old really needs something special.

    Hi Kelly,

I'm so very sorry for your family's loss. I was really touched by your story, so I hope I can help.

When people ask me to share a list of my favorite attractions at Walt Disney World, they're often surprised to hear me include the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover. Some people may enjoy that attraction because it's relaxing, or because you get to see an early model of EPCOT, or even because you can occasionally sneak a peek of Space Mountain with the lights on.

    That's all fine and good.

The real reason I love that attraction is because I feel like I'm getting to see the Magic Kingdom from the vantage point that Walt Disney sees it from Heaven. As he looks down on us all, he has to be so happy to see guests celebrating birthdays, sweethearts getting engaged, and families just simply enjoying moments in time that will become cherished memories.

So, my advice would be to plan experiences that will give your dad a chance to see the whole family in the same light that I imagine Walt Disney sees all of his guests - celebrating life and being happy.

If your dad had a favorite attraction, show, restaurant or other experience, I think it would be really important for your 12-year-old to show your dad that he will always be remembered, loved, and celebrated as you continue to enjoy the Disney experiences that he loved while he was here on Earth with us.

I'm sure your dad is smiling down on you all and is looking forward to seeing you enjoy your time in Walt Disney World in a few short months!

    Your friend,
    Derek
