What is the current mask policy for a child with special needs? My son can not wear a face mask. Are there any exceptions to the policy?

Hey there, hi there Victoria! Thanks for stopping by planDisney where you're always welcome as can be. I'm happy to assist a fellow Mouseketeer.

During the constantly evolving public health situation, it's more important than ever to stay tuned to official sites like the Disney Parks Blog for the most current information and protocols. You may have heard that just recently, Walt Disney World updated its face mask policy. At this time, face coverings are optional in most areas of the theme parks and resorts for Guests who are fully vaccinated; there are a few places everyone still needs to wear one, such as Disney transportation which requires ALL riders to don a mask.

All visitors who have not yet been vaccinated must continue to wear face masks in all indoor areas, on attractions, and while riding Disney transportation. Currently, there no exceptions to this rule. If your son is not yet vaccinated, he will need to wear a face-covering in the above situations. I have two little ones who aren't old enough to be vaccinated yet, so they'll be sporting their favorite shopDisney masks during our summer vacation.

My panelist friend, Samantha offers some great tips for helping children with special needs adjust to wearing a mask, and I recommend checking those out. I also wanted to share that since face coverings are only required indoors and while onboard rides and Disney transportation, the majority of your theme park day could take place without a mask on. Alternatively, consider taking some extra breaks to swim in the pool at your Resort Hotel or visiting Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park where masks would only be necessary when entering a shop. If even after practicing at home, wearing a mask proves impossible for your son, it might be best to postpone your trip until he is fully vaccinated, or until masks are optional for all visitors.

I hope this helps as you prepare for your upcoming trip, Victoria. Thanks for sending your question our way, and we look forward to seeing ya real soon!

Greetings! I'm Betsy, a middle school teacher, wife, and mom of two. My family and I love to travel the world, but our best memories are those made when we're visiting Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort. No matter how many times we visit, there is always something new to see, ride, or eat at the Disney Parks. Learn More About Betsy
