    Hello. We are cruising in one week. I have heard something about hanging a bag outside of your stateroom for people to leave trinkets or treats in. Can you give me the details about this?

    Oh, Angela! Are you over the moon with excitement about your upcoming Disney Cruise Line vacation?! I am for you!

    What you are referring to are Fish Extenders. They are an unofficial, sub-culture "tradition" on Disney Cruise Line where guests will hang a pocket or a series of pockets from the metal fish located outside their staterooms -- thus, the name fish extenders. Other guests will bring aboard candy, small gifts or trinkets to put in these pockets of other guests -- sort of like trick-or-treating in reverse. You can find detailed information about this practice on some of the Disney Cruise Line discussion boards among guests or simply type in "fish extenders" on your search engine.

    Yet for the Disney Dream, the discussion boards may have to rename this practice for that ship. The sea creatures outside the stateroom doors are fish on the port side but seahorses on the starboard side!

    Although I've never participated, my friends who have said that it's so exciting to return to your stateroom to find the treats, and it helps to encourage guests to get to know each other. Should you decide not to participate, you certainly won't feel left out...it's not an essential, and I've never participated simply for practical reasons. Once I'm done packing for six people, there just isn't any room left! I do, however, pack a dry-erase board for our stateroom doors to communicate with my family since cell-phone service is not an option for us while we're at sea, and everyone can't have one of the wave phones.
