Hi, Heather!
Congratulations on your first Disney Cruise which sets sail very soon! You must be crossing things off your list like every mom tends to do before a big trip. You're right to prepare for what might happen but expect a seamless voyage.
A physician and a nurse are on call 24 hours a day to provide basic medical services on every Disney cruise. They are employed by a company independent from Disney Cruise Line, and standard prevailing fees will be charged for all services -- which usually aren't covered by medical insurance. Therefore, for your peace of mind in case of unexpected medical emergencies, Disney Cruise Line recommends the purchase of the
Disney Cruise Vacation Insurance for costs incurred for treatment, medical evaluation and/or repatriation, if necessary. In addition to the medical services, there are medications -- such as antibiotics -- which can be dispersed to patients. However, you will be charged a premium.
As a traveling family, we have definitely experienced our share of minor illnesses and accidents while away from home. So, I always pack a small version of my medicine cabinet for every trip. I include something for tummy issues, band-aids and antibiotic ointment, motion sickness tablets, cold remedies, muscle-ache creams and pain relievers/fever reducers. For the most part, I've been able to treat my gang as "Dr. Mom," but there have been a few occasions where we've had to seek medical treatment while away. It's not always cost-efficient or convenient, but you do what you have to do when the situation arises. I hope and pray that your vacation is without incidents or illness.
Let me know if you think of other questions before you sail. Have a wonderful day and a magical vacation. Bon voyage!
