How crowded are the parks during the evening Extra Magic Hours compared to the mid day crowds? Are the lines for the popular rides any shorter? Are there any Fast Passes during EMH? Our 1st time at WDW, July 11-16. Thx from fellow B'ham-er.

Hey, Elaine from our hometown! I'm thrilled that you're visiting WDW for the first time. You've asked a great question. Many times, guests have the notion that during Extra Magic Hours they're going to breeze through lines for attractions with no wait times. Sometimes that actually is the case. However, during the summer months, you may have to wait for as much as 30 minutes or more for the most popular attractions. Typically, the later the EMHs are, the shorter the lines get. If you're willing and able to hang in there until the wee hours of the morning, you can see and do more in a shorter amount of time than during the day when the sun is the hottest!

Fast Passes aren't usually distributed during EMHs. Yet, much to my surprise, we've actually received return times during EMHs -- although we really didn't need them. Lines for attractions are usually shorter during EMHs -- morning or evening -- than during midday.

For summer trips, we routinely sleep in and have a late breakfast or early lunch. Then, we'll hang out at the pool or waterpark, visit an arcade or DisneyQuest or take in a movie at Downtown Disney. We make early dinner reservations at the park with EMHs and exit the restaurant just as the sun is setting. We'll visit the attractions that aren't open during EMHs before the park closes to other guests. Then, we are usually the last ones out of the park at the conclusion of EMHs -- we've even stayed at the Magic Kingdom until 4 a.m!

You're smart to start planning out your strategy for beating the crowds and the heat. If I can answer more questions for you, please come back and visit me here. I love knowing that I've helped a neighbor! Have a beautiful Alabama day and a magical vacation!
