Hi Melissa,
Thank you so much for visiting planDisney with your question. My family has often stayed at
The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort. We love both the cabins themselves, as well as the resort as a whole! The cabins are wonderful for us because you have your own space, complete with a living area and a kitchen. The theme at the resort is rustic yet lovely. It is so peaceful, like your own little respite just a little way away from the hustle and bustle of
Magic Kingdom.
Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort is quite large. Therefore, there is an internal bus system. The internal bus stops are along the main roads. The cabins are arranged in loops off of the main roads. Using the link I provided in the first paragraph, you can click on an interactive map and scroll around to see how this looks. While you theoretically could walk almost anywhere at this resort, it is so large that I would highly recommend using the internal bus system or a golf cart. The buses run frequently so you generally do not have to wait very long for a bus.
You asked about the main building. When you first enter Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort, you are at the Reception Outpost. This is where you can check in and rent golf carts. There is a large parking lot at this location. However, there are two other major locations for recreation at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort. There is the Meadow, which includes a majority of the
recreation options at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort, including bike rentals, the main pool, and the location for
Chip 'n' Dale's Campfire Sing-A-Long, which is a must-do when staying at this resort! You can roast marshmallows, sing songs, meet Chip and Dale, and see a movie under the stars! The final area that you might want to reach at this resort is the Settlement area. This area is toward the back of the resort, and houses entertainment such as the
Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue dinner show in Pioneer Hall as well as other dining, recreation, and shopping options. This area is also where you head to catch a boat to Magic Kingdom.
While you can park your car at the Reception Outpost or your cabin, you cannot park a car at the Meadow or Settlement. This is why guests may choose to
rent a golf cart. You will find parking for the golf carts nearly anywhere that you go at this resort. You can rent a golf cart at the Reception Outpost for your stay. I will say that while the golf carts look like a lot of fun and many guests love having them, my family has never rented one. We park our car at our cabin, and then we use the internal bus system to get wherever we are going at the resort. This has always worked really well for us.
While I would love to help you plan further, Melissa, I am limited in the amount of space that I have to answer. Please do feel free to come back and ask if you have any further questions while you plan your magical vacation!
