Considering NOT doing a dining plan (b/c want to purchase park tix from UC Tourist). What's the best way to do this/save $/still have fun eating @ Disney? Already planned to eat bfast in hotel. Will be doing a few char meals. Is not doing plan bad idea?

    Hi Amanda,

Dining at Walt Disney World is one of my favorite things to do (besides the attractions)! With the amazing list of options, we are always trying some place new each time in addition to hitting our old favorites. My family has done it both ways, with and without the dining plan. Personally, for my family, it is more of a savings to go without the dining plan. We have kids that don't have huge appetites (at least yet!), so getting a plan that offers appetizers, desserts (which we prefer them not to have at every single meal), we feel that we tend to waste food and possibly money.

However, there are many ways to save money while still getting a great experience at the variety of restaurants. We try to pick one "big" meal each day, which translates to a table service meal for my family. Whether it be a big buffet style character meal to start the day or a hearty dinner, we feel we can eat a little lighter or have several small snacks to get us through the rest of the day. We also bring individual snacks to carry around with us to save money from purchasing more expensive treats in the parks. We also eat breakfast in our resort room (unless we have a table service character breakfast planned) by bringing cereal or purchasing a package of muffins and milk at the resort or through an online grocery delivery service such as www.gardengrocer.com.

Also, just because some restaurants aren't table service doesn't mean their variety or atmosphere is lacking. By choosing some quick service locations, you can save a little money, time, and we also tend to share meals from these places. Some of my favorites are Columbia Harbour House, Pizzafari, Sunset Ranch Market and Flame Tree Barbecue.

    So, Bon Appétit,
