Coming to WDW in Mar. "09 with wife, daughter and 4 yr. old grandaughter who is autistic. Her vocabulary isn't as big as most children her age. Should we explain this to cast members or characters so they understand if she doesn't respond like others

Disney is a very popular destination for special needs families. The cast members see many children with developmental issues every day. They tend to take communication issues in stride. Remember, the cast members also deal with many children who don't speak any English at all. Characters in particular will be particularly kind and gentle. My guess is that you won't need to provide any "translation" for your granddaughter with them. For other cast members, say a server in a restaurant, you might have to provide a word or two of guidance. But I would only step in if necessary. I don't think you need to proactively tell anyone about your granddaughter's situation unless you want to.

I hope you all have a magical trip together.
